Why shooting on a fully mechanical camera ruined modern smartphone photography for me

Smartphones now capture 48-megapixel RAW photos with instant computational HDR, auto-tracking face focus, and real-time semantic segmentation. Technically, the images are flawless. Emotionally, they feel completely sterile.

When you carry an all-metal 35mm mechanical rangefinder with zero electronic batteries, the entire dynamic changes: Every single shutter release costs real money and physical roll space, completely eliminating mindless photo-spamming. You are forced to physically read light ratios, estimate subject distance, and align split-prism viewfinders by hand. You cannot check a preview screen instantly after clicking. The anticipation of waiting for the negatives to dry in a dark bag turns photography back into an intentional ritual. Modern smartphones produce sharp files, but mechanical film cameras force you to actually look at what you are framing before you press down the shutter.
