4-hour tracked exposure of the Orion Nebula from a Bortle 4 zone

After waiting through two weeks of cloud cover and haze, the skies finally cleared up for a crisp new moon window over the weekend. I packed up my gear and drove about two hours out to escape urban light pollution, settling in a Bortle 4 dark sky site with near-zero wind.

The setup for this session: Telescope: 80mm ED Triplet Apochromatic Refractor Mount: Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro with autoguiding via an ASI120MM mini Camera: Dedicated cooled astronomy camera (-10°C sensor temp) Acquisition: 120 x 120-second light frames, 30 darks, 40 flats, and 40 bias frames Processing this data was a fun challenge. Stacking in Siril extracted crisp faint dust structures across the outer filaments and resolved the Running Man nebula beautifully without blowing out the Trapezium cluster in the core. A gentle stretch in PixInsight with light star reduction brought the entire hydrogen-alpha background to life.
